Visual CE® with mEnable Combines Intuitive Database Development for Pocket PC's with Real-Time Wireless Access to Server Data

New software provides mobile users with interactive database access to corporate servers

Cambridge, MA (April 9, 2001). SYWARE, Inc., a leading developer of intuitive database tools for business and personal productivity, today announced Visual CE with mEnable, a new package that combines the popular Visual CE® database and forms building tool with mEnable®, SYWARE's breakthrough wireless software that allows mobile users to easily access and modify server data in real time. Visual CE with mEnable allows developers and systems integrators to quickly create data-driven handheld applications with wireless, interactive access to "live" corporate data. From medical records to warehouse management, the software enables a new generation of mobile computing solutions to fit any scenario where real time access to current data is important.

"Visual CE with mEnable is a compelling technology that solves data access problems for both application developers and end users," said Sy Danberg, President of SYWARE. "It's highly intuitive and easy to use, bringing mobile workers access to the same information resources as their wired counterparts, without the high costs and complexity of typical development projects. Business professionals or programmers can create a complete wireless application in a few hours, achieving the same functionality as teams of developers spending weeks or months using conventional development environments."

"In today's increasingly mobile society, the ability for a workforce to wirelessly interact with enterprise data in real time can be a decisive competitive advantage," added Rogers Weed, General Manager of the Mobil Device Division at Microsoft Corp. "Until now it's been difficult to achieve this goal, especially for small to mid-sized companies. As an easy to use productivity tool, Visual CE with mEnable will help companies make the transition from desk-bound computing to an empowered wireless enterprise."

Real-Time Wireless Architecture
The mEnable architecture allows any Visual CE application to wirelessly read from or write to any ODBC-enabled data source, including Microsoft SQL Server, Oracle, Microsoft Access, or Sybase. By providing Windows CE and Pocket PC users with full, interactive access to server databases, Visual CE with mEnable eliminates the need for synchronization that forced handheld users to rely on local data that had been previously downloaded and was no longer current. The result is real-time information for the mobile professional, as well as prevention of "islands of data" that occur when data is captured in the field and stored on the mobile device.

If users wander out of wireless range or the server is unavailable, they can work offline using the local database on the handheld. When the server connection is re-established, they can synchronize any changes made and resume processing live data.

TCP/IP and Bluetooth
Visual CE with mEnable uses the TCP/IP protocol to communicate over LAN, WAN, or Internet connections. The software communicates between the Windows CE device or Pocket PC and the server through standard wireless network adapter cards that install into the handheld unit. Support for TCP/IP also allows Visual CE with mEnable to work with the new Bluetooth protocol for short-range wireless communication, enabling users to operate their handheld PC while a cell phone provides the long-range connection.

The rich functionality of Visual CE with mEnable allows software developers as well as non-programmers to meet virtually any computing need required by an increasingly mobile work force. Drag-and-drop customization enables the rapid creation of database and forms applications that wirelessly read from and write to the server defined as the data source. Using any Windows CE device or Pocket PC, mobile users can seamlessly access server data whether in a local area network, such as a hospital or warehouse, or potentially worldwide, such as a corporate customer relationship management system.

Reporting Power for Mobile Users
Visual CE with mEnable also features an integrated version of SYWARE's Report CE® software, the world's only report writing tool for Windows CE and Pocket PCs. Using the same intuitive interface as Visual CE, mobile users can quickly design professional reports based on live server data. Powerful data handling and formatting capabilities allow users to design a wide variety of custom reports to fit their exact needs. A single report can draw data from an unlimited number of tables, residing on the server as well as the handheld device, with filtering that allows users to choose only the records they wish to view.

Numerous Applications
Visual CE with mEnable has many potential applications. In healthcare, doctors and nurses can immediately make visit notes part of a patient's record, or be notified immediately when test results are available. The software can also provide stockbrokers and related professionals with real time access to financial market data, or can provide warehouse management personnel with up-to-date inventory pick lists.

Packaging and Pricing
Visual CE with mEnable is available for purchase immediately at http://www.syware.com. The development package is priced at $599, and includes Visual CE Enterprise Edition, one mEnable license, and the Report CE reporting and printing tool. Individual mEnable licenses are available for enterprises looking to run on multiple remote units; the software is priced at $499 for a 10-pack, and $1999 for a 100-pack.
