SYWARE Article: Take Advantage of the Economic Downturn

Things are slow these days, that's no news. But this is a great opportunity to finally create the handheld infra-structure you've wanted but never had the time to set up. If you've been thinking of automating by using handhelds, it's relatively inexpensive to pick up a copy of Visual CE and get handhelds working for you. Get a Visual CE Personal Edition now for just US$129 and develop your application while you have the time. When the economy picks up, you can then upgrade to the Pro Edition for just the difference in price to roll out your application to your users. The economy will get better, be ready when it does.

SYWARE News: Visual CE and mEnable Can Now Directly Access Microsoft Excel Files

At the request of our users, we reexamined the Visual CE synchronizer and mEnable in regards to Microsoft Excel files. As it turns out, by making some changes to our products, we are able to work around some of the quirks in the Excel ODBC driver. Consequently, there are many cases where the Visual CE synchronizer and mEnable can directly access an Excel file. We will roll these into our next release, but we can send these changes to version 11 licensees on request. See the February 2009 Tip of the Month for more details.

Technical Tip from "Dr. DeeBee": Creating a Visual CE Macro that Updates More Than One Table

When a Visual CE macro runs, it can update records in the table associated with the form that holds the macro, but it can't write to any other table. For example, say you have a CUSTOMERS table and an ORDERS table: a macro in ORDERS form can record the order, but it can't update the CUSTOMERS table to record the date of the last order. But you can do this by "handing off" control from the ORDERS form to the CUSTOMERS form. Here's how to do this.

Mobile Industry News: Bluetooth 3.0 Introduced

A new version of Bluetooth technology has been introduced that is faster and provides increased throughput. Hopefully, in addition to speed, Bluetooth 3.0 will come with improved ease-of-use and reliability. Find out more about Bluetooth 3.0 here, here, and here
